Champagne Pommery – „The Woman Who Turned Champagne Upside Down“

Champagne Pommery is a French wine producer dedicated to top products in the world of French sparkling wines. The company traces its origins to Louis-Alexandre Pommery and Narcisse Gren and was founded in 1856 when Louis-Alexandre joined Narcisse’s business. However, the breakthrough for Pommery was Louise, the wife of Louise-Alexander. After the death of her husband, in 1855 she took over the management of the company and all the champagne production. She chose her own vineyards, which she planted in order to achieve a high quality harvest material.

Champagne production in Pommery

Pommery vineyards are of course located in the Champagne region. In the spirit of Louise, the highest emphasis is still placed on the selection of perfectly ripe grapes. The quality of the harvest and the exact location, as well as some other characteristics, is the freedom that the cellar masters have when assembling the cuvée. By the way, these parameters are more important for the character of individual wines than the dosage that is added to the sparkling wine. For example, Brut Royal is blended from vintages from 40 different locations. The vintage champagne consists of 7 wines from the Pommery Grand Cru site and the flagship, Prestige Cuvée, is produced from the company’s three best sites.

The first Brut champagne comes from Pommery

In 1874, the first Brut champagne revolutionized the world of sparkling wines. Perhaps a woman was needed to bring a breath of fresh air to the male-dominated world of winemaking. Her next major project was the expansion of the chalk tunnels under Reims, which were converted into large storage halls for champagne. Above them was built the dome of Domaine Pommery in the English style with neo-Gothic architecture. Right next to the Domaine is Les Clos Pompadour, one of the house’s best vineyards.

Today, Domaine Pommery is part of the Vranken-Pommery group, which also includes other big brands such as Charles Lafitte and Heidsieck.

The reins in the Pommery cellar are held by Clément Pierlot, who is the Chef de Cave. In the spirit of Pommery, the cellar mixes traditional craftsmanship with modern methods to bring together and the best quality.
